Description: This is a thematic unit for Grades 1 & 2 based on the book "Galimoto".

In addition to reading and writing activities in this unit, students should also participate daily in Reading and Writing Workshop. See the Teacher Manual for information about Reading and Writing Workshop. Send home the Pathways Home-School Connection Newsletter, which explains the home reading program, and a copy of the Home Reading Record for each student. You will find these in the Teacher Manual.

Faith Integration: "The focus of this theme is family and friends. This unit emphasizes the value of encouragement, working together, and learning to appreciate and value differences in all of our relationships. An appreciation for creativity is also promoted, with recognition that God is the ultimate Creator. Students will read and memorize Scripture. They will also be encouraged to choose a service project to complete sometime during this unit." Galimoto DLG.

Materials/Hardware/Software:

Teacher Preparation:
  • Bookmark the Story Map site on all class computers
  • Bookmark the Tagxedo website on all class computers
  • Find and bookmark some suitable websites, including those listed above for children to go to for information about Malawi etc. Make a list of key words to search for using Google or other search engine.
  • Make sure Open Office is installed and working properly on all computers.
  • Set up Skype or other. Make contact with a school in Malawi, Kenya or other, check time differences and set up a suitable time to make a class to class contact. Check on language differences and arrange for a translator if necessary.

Student Preparation:
  • Students need to know how to find bookmarks and click on them on computers.
  • Students need to know how to complete a Story Map activity and print it.
  • Students need to know how to tag words in their book that they don't know, and how to put those words into a Tagxedo Word Cloud and print it.
  • Students need to know how to type key words into Google and search, know how to select suitable sites to study, how to make notes from those sites, type and print them, and how to save pictures to a folder and print them.
  • Students need to know how to enter text into a document and resize the text body for use on cards, and how to print it.

Activities/Procedures:
  • In addition to the activities listed in the Daily Lesson Guide, include the following activities:
  • After reading "Galimoto", have children complete one of the Story Map graphics.
  • Use Tagxedo and have the children create a word cloud with vocabulary words they have sticky-noted as they read "Galimoto".
  • Use Google, or other search engine to fine pictures and information about Malawi, Kenya or other nearby African country, including at least something about galimoto toys.
  • Use Open Office or Star Office Presentation (same as Power Point) to make a presentation of pictures and information the children have gathered in the above activity.
  • Type Bible promises into a word processing document such as Open Office or Star Office text document, or MS Publisher. Resize the text to fit the size of the cards being used, and print. Decorate cards and add printed texts. Give to church members, parents, grandparents, nursing home residents or others as a service project.
  • Video Conference with students from Malawi or Kenya. Have students think ahead about questions they may wish to ask and things they might want to tell the other children about. Write these down.

Differentiated Instruction:
  • Differentiation for the Story Map, Tagxedo, and Bible promise card activities will come in the amount of assistance given to each child. Less assistance will be given to more able students. Younger students will also be given more assistance in locating and choosing suitable vocabulary words to use.
  • Differentiation for Research and Presentation will be as follows: More able students will be required to search more web sites, gather more text information and less pictures, create a slide show with more slides, and more complexity such as transitions and sound track etc.
  • More able students will also be encouraged to assist less able students in the class.

Classroom Management and Decoration:
Create a reading center with a collection of picture books, informative books, and magazines such as National Geographic about Africa. (Check for unsuitable content first.) Gather items and pictures from Africa and display them.

Assessment/Evaluation:
In addition to the Targets assessed using the Blackline Masters in the Daily Lesson Guide, students will produce:
  • A Story Map
  • A Word Cloud
  • At least one (most students will do more than one) Bible promise card
  • A list of questions to ask the children through the video conference
  • A research project about Malawi or other African country, using the following rubric as a guide to grades.
